Describing learning designs

While there are clearly many forms of learning design in use in classrooms and online settings throughout the world, there is currently no single set of learning designs that have been prescribed. Furthermore, there is no agreed means to prescribe learning designs so this online resource and the Learning Design Guide are at the cutting edge.

When teachers teach their students, they typically use some planned approach (learning design) but most teachers find it a very difficult process to describe how they teach. When one talks to teachers about how they teach, they all describe the process in very different ways and describe very different aspects of the learning settings. Typically the descriptions will detail the teachers’ actions and the intended students' actions in very different ways.

The description of a learning design helps a learning designer to know the elements that need to be planned and described. Deciding what these are is still an unknown science.
